Measuring for Inside Mount treatments
With or without draperies, window blinds offer light control, privacy, and beauty to any room. It's critical to measure accurately for inside-mount blinds. We'll tell you how.
Here's How:
- For an "inside mount blind" you must determine if there's enough room to install a blind and its heading in the window opening. If the edge of the window is flush with the wall, you'll need to use an "outside mount" blind.
- Measure the width of the window opening in 3 places--at the top, in the middle, and along the bottom edge or sill. Use the measurement to within 1/8 inch. You'll use the narrowest of these three measurements for your inside-mount blind width.
- Measure the height of the window opening in 3 different places--along the left side, in the middle, and along the right side. Use the measurement to within 1/8 inch. You'll use the longest of these measurements for your inside-mount blind length.
Tips:
- Always measure to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Do not round the measurement up or down.
- When writing the measurement, list the width first, then the height. The proper measurement would be "width X height."
- If you are not sure about how to make accurate measurements, you'll want to pay to have someone from the blind company come to your home to measure.
- If you provide your own measurements, you'll be responsible if the blinds do not fit. Blinds are custom items and must be perfect to look right.
What You Need:
- Steel measuring tape
- Paper and pencil
- A ladder or step stool if the window is high
Measuring for Outside Mount Treatments
Control the light, provide privacy for your living space, and add beauty with window blinds. Follow our easy steps and get tips on how to measure for outside-mount blinds.
Here's How:
- An "outside-mount blind" is a good choice if your window opening has no recess or if the window is out of "square." An outside-mount can be adjusted for irregular sizes.
- Determine how wide you want the blind, allowing for the mounting brackets. Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch. You can have a blind wider than the window and casing, but don't extend too far over the sides, as it will look strange when the blinds are open. You don't want to see too much wall under the slats of the blind.
- Measure for the height of the blind, allowing for the mounting bracket above the window opening and for the bottom of the blind to go beyond the bottom of the window sill and apron. Measure to the nearest 1/8 inch.
- As a rule, the blind will look nice if it extends about 3 inches beyond each side of the window. So a 42" window would use a 48" blind, allowing 3" on each side. If the window is 65" wide, you'd order the blind 71", again allowing for 3" on each side.
Tips:
- When writing the measurement, list the width first, then the height. The proper measurement would be "width X height."
- When measuring for an outside-mount blind, be sure to add extra height and width for the mounting hardware and any extra overhang desired.
- If you are not sure about how to make accurate measurements, you'll want to pay to have someone from the blind company come to your home to measure.
- If you provide your own measurements, you'll be responsible if the blinds do not fit. Blinds are custom items and must be perfect to look right.
